LGBT Studies Minor

LGBT Studies Minor

In recent decades, LGBT issues have been at the forefront of important national and international discussions, and LGBT Studies has become an established area of academic inquiry. This 15-hour minor examines the historical, cultural, political and theoretical issues relevant to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals, communities and allies.

It's a strong fit for students planning graduate study in fields where questions of gender and sexuality have reshaped traditional inquiry or for those pursuing careers in law, advocacy, health care or cultural programming that serves LGBTQ populations.

Program Structure

  • Required courses (9 hours): Introduction to LGBT Studies, Queer Theory and Seminar in LGBT Studies

  • Electives (6 hours), drawn from GWS courses or cross-listed options across departments

  • A minimum of nine hours must be taken in residence at Appalachian State University.

See the 2026-27 Undergraduate Bulletin for the complete elective list.
