Girls' Studies Minor

Girls' Studies Minor

Girls remain one of the most exploited populations worldwide, especially during the years when they're taught norms about gender, appearance and sexuality, and at the same time, girls have long been powerful creators of cultures that define themselves on their own terms. This 15-hour minor applies GWS's interdisciplinary approach with a specific focus on gender and age.

It complements any major and is especially useful for students planning to work with girls as educators, health care providers or advocates.

Program Structure

  • Required courses (6 hours): Sex, Gender, and Power and Girls Coming of Age

  • GWS electives (6 hours)

  • General electives (3 hours), drawn from GWS courses or cross-listed options in criminal justice, English, history, psychology, sociology and more

  • A minimum of nine hours must be taken in residence at Appalachian State University.

See the 2026-27 Undergraduate Bulletin for the complete elective list.
