Gender, Women’s and Sexuality Studies Program Presents:
Gayatri Gopinath – “Promiscuous Intimacies: The Art of Shahzia Sikander”
April 20th, 2021, 4-5pm EST.
Dr. Gopinath is a Professor & Director of the Center for the Study of Gender & Sexuality at NYU. Her research expertise includes transnational queer and feminist studies; postcolonial studies; visual art; performance. In her 2018 book, Unruly Visions, published by Duke University Press, Gopinath stages unexpected encounters between works by South Asian, Middle Eastern, African, Australian, and Latinx artists such as Tracey Moffatt, Akram Zaatari, and Allan deSouza. The queer optics produced by these visual practices creates South-to-South, region-to-region, and diaspora-to-region cartographies that profoundly challenge disciplinary and area studies rubrics.
