Dr. Sarah J Greenwald

Sarah J. Greenwald is Professor of Mathematics and Faculty Affiliate of Gender, Women's and Sexuality Studies (GWS) at Appalachian State University and was Interim Director of GWS in Spring 2018. Courses taught in the interdisciplinary studies department include introduction to mathematics for Watauga Residential College (WRC 1010), women and underrepresented groups in mathematics (MAT 4010/IDS 3530), and gender, media, and popular culture (GWS 3350).

Investigating connections between mathematics and society, Greenwald has won awards for teaching, scholarship and service. These include the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teacher of the Year, an Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) Service Award, and a Mathematical Association of America Pólya Lecturer award. As an AWM Fellow, Greenwald was cited for “creative and effective efforts to spark interest in mathematics among young people, especially girls… extensive contributions to advancing women in mathematics through writing, lectures and working with professional societies… and mentorship of students.”

Greenwald earned a PhD in mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania. Co-edited publications include the 3-volume Encyclopedia of Mathematics & Society, which was named a “Best Reference 2011” by Library Journal, a book Women in Mathematics: Celebrating the Centennial of the Mathematical Association of America, a book Fifty Years of Women in Mathematics: Reminiscences, History, and Visions for the Future of AWM, and a special issue of the journal PRIMUS on promoting women in mathematics.
